Why to Avoid These Forbidden Games like God Of War
Video games like God of War contain many elements that are clearly forbidden (haram) in Islam. Muslims should be aware of these issues and avoid playing such games altogether.
Here are the main reasons these games are considered haram:
1. Promotion of Shirk (Associating partners with Allah):
The God of War games story is based on the ancient Greek belief of having many gods like Zeus, Poseidon, Ares and others. The games show these mythological gods as powerful and important, giving them abilities like gods. This directly promotes shirk, which means believing in other gods besides Allah.
Shirk considers others as equal to Allah, which is a major unforgivable sin in Islam. The idea of there being multiple gods itself goes completely against the core teachings of Islam which state that there is only Allah.
2. Depiction of Sorcery and Magic:
In this games, players frequently encounter supernatural elements like sorcery, mythical beasts, spellcasting, and more, which are forms of sihr (magic) prohibited in Islam.
The protagonist Kratos himself wields incredible magical abilities derived from the Greek gods. Islam strictly forbids all dealings with any form of sorcery, black magic or the occult.
3. Nudity, Sexuality and Promiscuity:
The games contain an abundance of nudity, sexualized depictions of women, pornographic imagery and explicit sexual references. There are numerous scenes involving promiscuity and deviant sexual behaviors.
This utterly contradicts the Islamic principles of hayaa (modesty) and precautions against pornography/zina (unlawful sexual relations).
4. Extreme Violence and Glorification of Killings:
A lot of excessive and gruesome violence is shown throughout the God of War games, with a major focus on intense bloody fighting and combat. Kratos is an anti-hero who enjoys and takes pleasure in brutally killing and dismembering his enemies in very violent ways.
The way murder and killings are glorified and made to look exciting in these games can desensitize people, especially young people, towards violence over time. Islam instructs Muslims to avoid promoting or indulging in unnecessary violence.
5. Weapons based on Unholy Concepts:
Kratos’ main weapon, the Leviathan Axe, and other gear like the Blades of Chaos, are said to have magical powers from old myths. These myths are from pagan beliefs, meaning they involve many gods and are unrelated to any one religion.
In Islam, believing in Allah is very important, and we as Muslims are not allowed to make or own things that support the idea of many gods or that are against their beliefs.
6. Bad Language:
The dialogue contains many instances of bad and offensive language. This includes swearing, sexual comments, and insults against other religions. Such abusive and inappropriate speech is not allowed in Islam, which encourages clean and respectful language and behavior.
7. Depictions of Intoxicants:
Certain scenes portray the consumption of alcoholic beverages like wine and Greek spirits. Intoxicants of any kind are strictly prohibited (haram) in Islam due to their innumerable physical, moral and spiritual detriments. This portrays a bad influence on kid’s minds.
8. Disrespect Towards Family and Parents:
In the story of this game, Kratos kills his family members, including his father and wife. This behavior is completely against the principles of Islam.
In Islam, there is a strong force in showing respect, kindness, and obedience towards parents and family members. Treating family with love and respect is considered very important, and harming them in any way is strictly forbidden.
9. Adding Gambling Features:
Some recent God of War titles have introduced gambling systems like loot boxes or other randomized purchase mechanisms that can promote gambling addictions. All forms of gambling are impermissible (haram) in Islam due to societal harm.
10. Wastage of Time:
These games are extremely violent and unrealistic, making them addictive and unproductive. They waste the precious time Allah has given us for “Salah” and read the “Quran”. Islam teaches us to use our time in beneficial ways and help build moral, spiritual, and societal good.

O children of Adam! We have provided for you clothing to cover your nakedness and as an adornment. However, the best clothing is righteousness. This is one of Allah’s bounties, so perhaps you will be mindful.

This verse instructs Muslim men and women to avoid looking at anything inappropriate and to protect themselves from immoral behavior. Playing games that include nudity, obscenity, and explicit sexual content goes against the clear guidance to maintain one’s purity and modesty.
Quran Verse on intoxicants And Gambling
Surah in written form:
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا ٱلْخَمْرُ وَٱلْمَيْسِرُ وَٱلْأَنصَابُ وَٱلْأَزْلَـٰمُ رِجْسٌۭ مِّنْ عَمَلِ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ فَٱجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
“O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.”

Here Allah explicitly prohibits Muslims from consuming intoxicants like alcohol. He terms it as evil from Satan itself and commands us to stay away from it completely. Any games promoting alcoholic drinks or their consumption are going against the rule of islam.
