Divorce can only happen if all efforts to save the marriage have failed. It has to follow certain rules and processes to be valid in Islam. An unhappy or harmful marriage may be better ended than forcing it to continue.
10 Reasons When Divorce is Permissible in Islam?
While divorce is not encouraged in Islam, there are certain situations where it becomes permissible under Islamic laws and teachings.
1. Continuous Marital Disputes
If a husband and wife keep arguing and can’t solve their problems, they can ask for help from respected family members. If that doesn’t work, they can get a divorce.
2. Spousal Abuse
The Quran says it’s wrong to mistreat your spouse, whether it’s hitting them, being mean to them, or hurting them emotionally. If someone keeps being cruel to their spouse even after trying to fix things, they can get a divorce.
3. Disloyalty From Husband or Wife
If one spouse cheats on the other, it’s like breaking a promise they made to each other. In such cases, they can get a divorce after going through the proper steps.
4. Religious Incompatibility
The Quran suggests that it’s better for people to marry someone who shares their beliefs. If a couple can’t get along because of their different beliefs, they can choose to get a divorce.
5. Financial Conflicts
If a couple can’t agree on how to handle money and it’s causing a lot of stress, they can get a divorce according to the teachings of the Quran.
6. Mental/Physical Incapacity
If one spouse becomes unable to fulfill their duties in the marriage because of a mental or physical problem, they can get a divorce.
7. Irreconcilable Differences
Sometimes, couples just can’t get along no matter what they do. If they’ve tried everything and still can’t make it work, they can get a divorce.
8. Misbehavior Despite Counseling
If one spouse keeps doing bad things even after trying to fix them, they can get a divorce according to the Quran.
9. Abandonment
If one spouse leaves the other for a long time without saying anything, the Quran allows the abandoned spouse to seek a divorce.
10. Preventing Greater Harm
If staying married is causing more harm than good and there’s no way to fix things, the Quran says it’s okay to get a divorce.
